Derek Porter lectures at the University of Iowa Museum of Art, October 17, 2013

Derek visits the UI Art Museum to share his work in architectural lighting design, product design and photography.  His multi-disciplinary practice, spanning 20+ years, emerges from the common interest in exploring relationships between light, human perception, memory and how societies inhabit the constructed world.  Through this work he considers human evolution and inherited ancestral traits, psychological and physiological responses to environmental conditions, relations to natural systems and how these cumulative historical influences affect our contemporary association to technology and spatial contexts.  In addition to presenting his own work, Derek will share selected works by scientists, researchers and artists that have influenced his personal vision and helped to shape questions toward the responsibility that design should assume toward our society’s future and its ever increasing complexity.
