COAST AND VALLEY

The architect for Coast and Valley conceived the idea of creating a barrel-vaulted chandelier made of wine bottles for this small Brooklyn wine bar. She approached Derek Porter Studio to help develop and execute the chandelier and the overall lighting design for the dining area.

Working with a custom manufacturer, Derek Porter Studio conceived of a compression fitting that fits inside the ¾” wine bottle neck and tighten by rotating a lock ring, securing the luminaire inside the bottle. The assembly is comprised of a limited number of components in order to minimize cost. Early prototypes were made to test mechanical and luminous performance and to determine if clear or frosted bottles would be used.

Pendant drop lengths were determined based upon the barrel vault shape and set in the factory.  Pendants are secured to ceiling mounted channels that were pre-wired and shipped to the site to minimize field labor. Pendant layout is organized in two off-set patterns, alternating between rows, to increased perceived density of the grid array.

The final installation is comprised of 406 pendants that provides ambient illumination for the entire dining area and a visual feature for those dining in and to gain street-view appeal.  Use of clear bottles was decided from the mockup based upon the specular surface and caustic reflections which adds to the visual complexity of the overall assembly.

Other dining area lighting includes two track runs over the perimeter seating areas. The track is 2-circuit to control accenting of walls and support pendant drops over tables.
